The line up of the U.S.A. gods would not be complete unless we listed the god of "SELF" -- this one becomes dominant due to the emphasis on "self-esteem," an avalanche of published works on "self-help" themes, and counseling that centers on catering to the ego and its desires!

In order to keep a right perspective on this, review what Jesus Christ, the Son of God, said about the self -- you know, things like "..deny yourself, take up the cross daily..." etc! This is how He stated it in Luke 9:23,24:
Then He said to them all, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it."
