"There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD, and because of these abominations the LORD your God drives them out from before you."
Also he (Manasseh) caused his sons to pass through the fire in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom; he practiced soothsaying, used witchcraft and sorcery, and consulted mediums and spiritists. He did much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him to anger.
Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.
Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.....

There's "magic" in the air these days -- or might we say, just an onslaught of demonic spirits trying out the latest weapon in their arsenal! Ever since the first story of Harry Potter was released huge numbers of people have been mesmerized -- from the very young to older adults -- by the antics of this lad who practices a forbidden craft (forbidden by God, that is!) and experiences all kind of adventures in the process!
Additional books have been written by author Joanne K. Rowling and a movie about Harry and his antics has been released, not to mention the hype and publicity this has inspired, to the delight of those infected with Potter-mania disease!
Those who have been critical of the story line and its employment of such activities as casting spells, mixing potions, use of a magic wand, etc. on Biblical grounds have been assailed as being too narrow and dogmatic. After all, it's just an innocent story with a mixture of fantasy and imagination which provides great entertainment for children and youth.
The appeal is made that we have had stories in the past that have not caused the kind of criticism such as Harry Potter has received. Cited are such stories as that of King Arthur and the magician, Merlin. Or Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs with the queen practicing witchcraft and sorcery -- and who can deny that the Snow White story has been extremely popular over the years with the Disney animated film now available in VHS and DVD.
Some also point out that Harry P. is an excellent opportunity for parents to sit down with their kids and view Harry's adventures and then do some "explaining" about what is going on -- this provides a good "learning" experience and promotes family "togetherness!" OK, then would these same advocates encourage parents to rent a porno movie and sit down with their children and explain what's going on????? And who can deny that the kids will have quite a "learning" experience out of that -- certainly they will learn all about the "birds and bees" in dramatic fashion!
As for Merlin, there isn't really much of a message there that encourages children to try this or that -- after all, he is an old man. Harry Potter, however, is a peer of school age kids, and easily becomes a hero to them, and certainly someone to be imitated. The casting of spells, even directed toward persons one doesn't like, is appealing -- it's a way of "getting even" with someone with whom you've had problems!
And in the Snow White film, the queen is pure evil and comes to a tragic end, so that the message is very unattractive -- namely, that witchcraft isn't a profitable venture as portrayed in the Snow White film. And the old hag of a witch does not successfully bring the young to state of instant envy -- that is, with kids saying, "Wow! I want to be just like her!" But you will find kids who want to be like Harry Potter and to be able to do the things he does!
