Please permit me to make a statement before you get to Theo -- he's been a big help, but I figured I'd do this one myself. Since Theo's announcement as given below, things have changed a bit -- the project, which was started in 2003, is continuing for an indefinite time -- each United Methodist bishop is being sent a letter personally addressed to him or her as the case may be. A second letter was then sent with very few responses from the bishops. So the letter has been revised with a rather graphic poster added at the bottom, reminding the bishops of an issue on which they have been very tight lipped -- when was the last time you heard a UM bishop express outrage at the senseless destruction of about 25,000 unborn children every week? In addition to the bishops, copies of the letter to the president and vice president are also being sent to members of the media outlets (TV stations, newspapers, news magazines) and to other elected officials at federal and state levels, and to other church leaders beyond the United Methodist Church. It's an interesting and very challenging project taking place each week -- why don't you try it, you might even get to like it -- in a strange sort of way! -- cdh
Hello there -- Theo here again -- yes, I'm still the circuit rider's assistant here on Circuit Rider's Range. CDH, the circuit rider, has launched into a project which involves the active bishops of the United Methodist Church. Each of the bishops will have the following sent to him/her personally over the next few weeks:
1.) A letter which explains the reason for the contact. The letter reads as follows:January 2003 To: All United Methodist Bishops in the United States
Subject: Letter to President George W. Bush & V. President Richard Cheney
Letter to President Barack Obama & V. President Joe Biden
Dear Bishop X:
Enclosed please find copy of letter which is being sent to the president and vice president on a regular basis. I try to get this to them at least once a week or every 10 days.
You will note that the letter raises a number of issues that are critical to the well being of our nation.
Some of those are extremely critical, such as the violent murders of over 42 million unborn children over a 30 year period, and have not been seriously addressed by elected officials nor by a majority of church leaders. It seems we sort of turn our heads the other way and try to deny what is really happening and how Almighty God views such antics in a nation that professes to be a "nation under God!"
It will take some time and expense to get this out to all of you, but eventually I will accomplish that objective. Thanks for giving it at least a little bit of consideration.

CDH keeps changing things around -- it's hard to try to keep up with what he's doing. Below is the new version of the letter being sent to the United Methodist bishops. As you can see, the one below is a copy sent to a rookie bishop, Sally Dyck, who, after intense campaigning, was elected to be a UM bishop during a Jurisdictional Conference in 2004. This is the third time around -- letters are sent until a response is received. One bishop took the easy way out and had her administrative assistant make a reply.

I had written to you previously and enclosed the letter to the president, but did not receive a response from you as I have from some of the other bishops. I assumed, therefore, that you did not get the letter, so I am sending it again.

Encl: Letter to President Bush and Vice President Cheney
Responses from UMC bishops are always interesting -- that is, if they choose to respond. CDH has at times corresponded with all UMC bishops by fax, email, and personal letters sent through the US Postal Service.
One of the more interesting responses came as a result of letters written to the three bishops in the state of Pennsylvania a number of years ago. The three had issued a "pastoral letter" (bishops seem disposed to do this once in a while) on the subject of eliminating capital punishment in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Each UM pastor was to read this letter to his/her congregations. The people were being strongly urged to get involved in bringing an end to the death penalty in Pennsylvania.
CDH wrote to each of those bishops and indicated he would be more than willing to read the letter to his three congregations when and if he received a letter from them equally strong and forceful in opposing abortion on demand in this country!
The female bishop down in eastern Pennsylvania did not respond at all.
The bishop in Central PA Conference responded with a few terse sentences which when simply translated read: "Who are you to question us?"
CDH's own bishop in the W. PA Conference delayed a bit in responding and when he did, he admitted that abortion was a serious issue, but that CDH was making a little too much of the issue!
As you probably realize by now, the requested letter from the three was never received and their "pastoral letter" was never read to the congregations.
So, drop back from time to time to see if there are any episcopal responses to the above project. If any respond, those responses may be posted here -- minus the names of course -- then you can engage in a guessing game -- just who wrote what
