News release revealed that on Monday afternoon, February 8, Congressman John Murtha died as a
result of complications following gall bladder surgery. Since that time media outlets in the
Johnstown PA area have been dominated by reports on anything and everything related to John
Murtha. --- numerous TV, radio and printed news sources

but rather reality -- John P. Murtha held the status of a
deity and was indeed a Santa to thousands of devoted
followers in Johnstown PA and surrounding area!
Congressman John Murtha died on February 8th and today, February 16th, his funeral will be held
at Westmont Presbyterian Church in Johnstown and then he will be buried. Ever since his death
the media have given attention to him and his career in the United States Congress from the time he
was first elected by a special election in the early ‘70’s.
That John Murtha was a very powerful congressman with lots and lots of clout is undeniable.
That his district greatly benefitted from his influence is also undeniable. The area receiving
the greatest benefit was his home town, the city of Johnstown PA. Lush government contracts,
especially those related to defense, came pouring into Johnstown over time! Millions of
dollars flowed into the region even when it was a glaring example of the waste of taxpayer
dollars as in the case of the radar system costing 8 million dollars at the Johnstown Airport,
but has never been used! But big John made it happen.
He was highly controversial at times whether it was a matter of “connections” and “favoritism”
or statements made which cast his constituents in a very negative light. At one point we
within the boundaries of his district were referred to as “rednecks” and “racists.” He had
called some Marines “cold blooded killers” but in spite of the fact that those whom he accused
were later exonerated, he never issued apologies. He demonstrated the same arrogant spirit as
our present president on some of these issues.
But the big question is, what will Johnstown PA do now that it no longer has John Murtha
channeling millions of dollars into the area? Defense contracts are always uncertain as it is
and now that the Murtha influence is no longer there, what will happen in times ahead?
Murtha held a status in the mindset of the Democratic stronghold of Johnstown that rivaled
that of Almighty God Himself! The attitude was one that Murtha would be in D.C. forever! Oh,
when pressed the most dedicated devotee would say, “Oh, someday Murtha will step down, but not
for quite a while!” Even recently when the question arose as to maybe he would retire, the
response was quite adamant in insisting that he had no plans for retirement at the present
time!”
Speculation is sweeping the region with the possibility that Mrs. Murtha may seek to replace
him when the special election is held. If she does chose to run, in all likelihood, she will
win the seat due to sentiment and sympathy. And the Democrats want to hold on to that seat at
all costs, no matter what tactics have to be employed!
But whatever the case, whoever does win the seat of the departed congressman, things will be
distinctly different than they were before. Johnstown PA will find the financial “spigot” that
had been turned on full force has been greatly reduced and those millions of dollars will not
be flowing as they used to! It will be interesting to watch the scramble prior to the special
election to be held and the game of “politics” played as it’s never been played before!
A few of us will take heart, however, with the fact that one of these days ALL politicians
will be removed from office and the One Who holds the distinct title, King of kings and Lord
of lords, will return to this world He originally created and take control. What an exciting
time that will be!
