"Thus says the LORD: 'Do not deceive yourselves, saying, "The Chaldeans will surely depart from us," for they will not depart. For though you had defeated the whole army of the Chaldeans who fight against you, and there remained only wounded men among them, they would rise up, every man in his tent, and burn the city with fire.'"
-- Jeremiah 37:9,10
President George W. Bush gave his annual State of the Union address with less than a measurable amount of enthusiasm in contrast to how it has been in previous years when the Republican Party has been very high profile and in control of the U.S. Congress.
But everyone tried to put on their best face for the occasion and word was that Madam Speaker of the House of Representatives had sort of passed the “directive” that everyone was to “behave” – whatever all that may have meant to the Democratic majority.
Since George is not real popular right now after announcing intentions to send another 20,000 or more troops into war ravaged Iraq it was expected that some reference would be made to the Iraq situation. In the course of discussing the subject, the president made his appeal to opponents of this plan – “Give it a chance to work.”
Will it really work? It is highly unlikely, but for a solid reason which the president and elected officials will not honestly face. But it is also an issue which the majority of U.S. citizens will not face as well.
An ancient history lesson provides the basis as to why we can hardly expect a resounding success in our military ventures anywhere in the world at the present time. The ancient kingdom of Judah was being threatened with invasion by the heathen Babylonian Empire under the leadership of King Nebuchadnezzar. But for years prophets such as Jeremiah, Ezekiel and others had been warning of impending judgment at the hands of God due to massive rebellion and rejection of the laws and standards which God had revealed to be absolutely necessary for their well being and a secure future. The call for repentance had been ignored and those God had raised up to issue that call were often persecuted, if not killed – prophets were more often than not very unpopular people as is true in today's world!
Things reached the point where the king and the people were told that it would be better to surrender than to try to resist since no serious effort was made to repent and get their lives squared away with God. And so the spirit of defiance prevailed with one of the final warnings being that should they seem to be successful militarily in holding off the Babylonians, even the wounded among the enemy who survived would rise up and destroy the city of Jerusalem. Details of the slaughter and devastation are most unpleasant to read.
Simply put, the hand of God was now against the people who claimed to believe in Him and who claimed God was their God. His blessings had been withdrawn and now only defeat and disaster lie in store for the once mighty kingdom of Judah!
Now let's fast forward a few centuries in time -- since its establishment over 230 years ago when it officially declared its independence the United States has in different ways acknowledged the existence of God. It is seen in early historical documents as well as statements made by prominent persons in the history of the republic. This official recognition is also seen in the “In God We Trust” statement inscribed on currency and coins. We declare that we are “one nation under God” as we place hand over heart and pledge our allegiance to our flag and the republic for which it stands.
But professing to believe in God and practicing a lifestyle which provides credibility to the profession can be as different as bright daylight is from dense darkness at the midnight hour! That is precisely where we are at as a culture at the present time.
Evidence is overwhelming everywhere one looks as to the sure and certain path of chaos and destruction which we in the United States have chosen to travel.
At the forefront is our heinous national crime of having destroyed tens of millions of unborn children. Following in the area just below are 4 different sets of numbers as to victims of the United States version of “holocaust” over defined periods of time – we have managed to give new meaning to the term since the WW II Nazis practiced it! Observe these which involve the following numbers:
Grand total unborn victims since January 22, 1973!
Total of unborn victims dating from United States’ invasion of Iraq on March 19, 2003!
Total of unborn victims dating from terrorists’ attacks on September 11, 2001!
Total of unborn victims dating from day “pro-life” President George W. Bush took oath of office on January 20, 2001 for his first 4 year term!
Grand total of unborn victims since infamous Supreme Court decision of Roe v. Wade, January 22, 1973:
Unborn Babies Brutally
Mutilated and Murdered
since Roe vs. Wade

Now there are a host of other issues which decisively bring down the judgment of a holy God upon a rebel and hypocritical nation of people. These are explored in detail in other areas of this web site and there are numerous links below which will take you into those areas.
Just don’t be surprised as time passes that it seems like things are unraveling in our culture more than just a little bit. Part of God’s dealings with a culture is the bringing of judgment upon the “idols” to which it has chosen to give devotion – money and intense desire for huge amounts of it would be one which dominates the lives of millions of all ages, but there are a lot more besides the money “god.” When God responds to this deeply entrenched devotion and love given to the money "god" we can expect devastation on Wall Street with the stock market immersed in chaos and the so-called "experts" in the world of finance plagued with mental confusion as they try to understand and explain what is happening! It will be most interesting to listen to the Fox News (you know, that network that is fair and unbiased) financial reports at that time
For those who claim to be honest in facing reality, a little reading project helps to expand this issue even more – read through the 28th chapter of the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament of the Bible. In anticipation of those who may object and say it has nothing to do with the United States of America, I simply reply, “Has God revealed standards by which He expects people and nations to be in compliance or not? And if He has, to what degree is the United States totally in compliance with God’s laws and standards at the present time?”
Oh, as detective Columbo would say, "There's just one more thing!" If you tackle that little reading assignment mentioned above, how about adding that "one more thing" -- look up the phrases which refer to the shedding of "innocent blood" in the Bible and see how God views such "activity" and His comments about such -- you just might get a new perspective on how a republic identified as the U.S. of A. is regarded by the Creator of this mighty universe! Here's one reference to get you started -- look in chapter 7 of Jeremiah and there you will find such things as the following:
a statement explicitly referring to the shedding of innocent blood -- in fact, God is calling on them to cease the practice!
a statement in which God tells the prophet not to pray any longer for the people for it will do no good and the prayer will definitely not be heard!
a statement that the nation does not listen to God and it refuses to receive correction -- even worse, truth has perished and is cut off from their mouth!
a statement which refers to the practice of burning sons and daughters in the fire -- an abomination which has aroused the deep displeasure of God!
Come to think of it -- those things sound rather up to date, do they not? The kind of things taking place here and there rather frequently within the boundaries of a country known as the United States of America!
"The instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, to pull down, and to destroy it, if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it.And the instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, if it does evil in My sight so that it does not obey My voice, then I will relent concerning the good with which I said I would benefit it. Now therefore, speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, 'Thus says the LORD: Behold, I am fashioning a disaster and devising a plan against you. Return now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good."' And they said, "That is hopeless! So we will walk according to our own plans, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart."
-- Jeremiah 18:7-12I rest my case! And, by the way, those Babylonians (Chaldeans) mentioned earlier had their powerful kingdom located on a piece of real estate known in today's world as Iraq!
Below are links which explore this issue in greater detail plus consideration of the very real possibility of God’s judgment coming upon a republic known as the United States of America!
A Significant Selah Moment!
O LORD, how long shall I cry, and You will not hear? even cry out to You, "Violence!" And You will not save. Why do You show me iniquity, and cause me to see trouble? For plundering and violence are before me; there is strife, and contention arises. Therefore the law is powerless, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; therefore perverse judgment proceeds.
Habakkuk 1:2-2 (NKJV)
