May 15, 2003 -- The United Methodist Council of Bishops met recently in Perkins Chapel on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Texas. This group, numbering about 143, includes active and retired bishops from all over the world.
One headline indicated that the bishops would focus on children and poverty concerns at the semi-annual meeting which opened on April 27, 2003. It was back in 1996 that the bishops launched a highly publicized program called, "Initiative on Children and Poverty."
Certainly it would be rare for any person to object to efforts put forth to assist children with their many needs throughout the world. And as reports have shown, there have been commendable things accomplished in efforts to relieve children who are suffering from lack of food, proper medical treatment, education, etc.
But what is so very strange is the silence of the bishops over this period of time regarding concern for the well being of all unborn children -- well, they are children aren't they? I mean you can hardly identify them as animal, vegetable, mineral, or chemical, can you? And is it not true that most who claim to be Christian would want to view unborn children in the same manner as the Creator of this universe views them -- identifiable individuals whom He forms in the wombs of their mothers for a very wonderful purpose? The reason for the use of the word "most" is due to the fact that there is overwhelming evidence that not all who profess to be Christian really want to view unborn children in the same way as they are viewed by Almighty God!
But there is something that has been happening to large numbers of unborn children every year -- brutal assault, mutilation, and murder resulting in the tragic deaths of well over 1.2 million of these children in this country alone each year! When was the last time you heard a United Methodist bishop express outrage at this rank injustice? Answer is simple -- you haven't! As an aside, see how many unborn children have been brutally assaulted, mutilated, and murdered from the day the bishops began their meeting on April 27, 2003 and heard the reports on what is being done for children -- well, not all -- they have drawn a very deep "line in the sand" at the entrance to the human womb -- their silence provides credible evidence that they have!

In past correspondence with UM bishops over this issue, responses (when I received any) were most interesting. If you could have seen only the text with no name or identifiable group mentioned, you would quickly have concluded that the letter was from a Washington DC politician -- similarities are almost unbelievable! I mean there is a highly skilled art in double talk and attempts at fence straddling.
One bishop was a bit terse in her response -- she simply said that the "official" position of the United Methodist Church on abortion as stated in the Book of Discipline was the position to which she held. Presumably, if at the United Methodist Church General Conference in 2004 the "official" position would somehow be changed to one of a hardline opposition to abortion on demand, then the lady bishop would shift in her position also! But don't hold your breath on that -- in all likelihood, the UMC sanctioning of abortion on demand will remain.
Another question which you don't hear discussed too much in the UM Church these days is this -- how many additional members do you supposed the UM Church would have if the United States version of "holocaust" would not ever have happened? And what significant contributions might those additional members have made for the advancement of Christianity throughout the world, had they been permitted to have lived and been born? Come on now -- there would have been some of those nearly 42 1/2 million victims who would have become members of the UMC! See the little table just below for the latest tally of victims -- unborn children brutally mutilated and murdered in the womb because of a perverted interpretation of the U.S. Constitution which says that it is a woman's "right" to destroy her unborn child if she elects to do so -- and this with the approval of the United Methodist Church due to its "official" position on abortion!
So when you hear of the United Methodist Church bishops expressing concern about children, just remember that they have drawn a "line in the sand" on this -- the line is at the entrance to the human womb -- children on the womb side of the line don't matter! Just ask those who are regarded as "shepherds" of the United Methodist Church -- they'll tell you so -- but don't be surprised if you get a lot of political double talk in the process which will leave you wondering what in the world they were trying to say!
