"The grassroots push for a progressive fiscal cliff deal is heating up. A coalition of labor unions, liberal pressure groups, and community organizations will stage ..." --- One of many internet browser headlines related to the fiscal cliff drama being played out in Washington DC
For weeks we have been exposed to the mess in Washington DC identified as the "fiscal cliff." There is a scramble taking place as Democrats and Republicans engage in a duel (or is it the old game of "chicken?") as a deadline approaches that will greatly impact the financial well being of our republic.
As politicians, and especially the president, jockey for an advantageous position fears are expressed that we will indeed fall over the precipice and financial disaster of unprecedented proportions will take place! So the pressure is on to reach some kind of compromise.
BUT the fiscal cliff is not really the major problem -- it is the moral cliff that needs urgently to be addressed and that as soon as possible -- you know, like yesterday!
Evidence, however, is overwhelming that we as a nation have already dropped over that cliff. Statistics of varying kinds indicate that we are resolved to duplicate the moral conditions of the ancient cities of Sodom and Gomorrah in every detail plus adding some things that perhaps they were not capable of even imagining in their unregenerate minds!
As we are about to cross the threshold into our 40th year of persistent mutilation and murders of unborn children, one has to wonder if this may be the last year that God offers mercy upon the condition of repentance or whether we are resolved to do "business as usual" and thus invite His undiluted wrath to be poured out upon us in judgment! The tally at this point in time (12/12/13) is over 55 million victims - that is quite a river of innocent blood to say the very least.

and see what happens! Our technology has enabled us to portray all manner of violence and sexual immorality by means of visual images. All this can be accessed by persons of all ages, ranging from preschool to old senior citizens. There is no serious attempt to bring this under control, in part because it is claimed that this is a basic constitutional right under what is commonly called "free speech."
So as we witness the bitter fruit of this moral junk which is spreading like the Bubonic Plague that killed huge numbers back in the middle ages, we are forced to admit that unless drastic changes do take place, we will end up as did other big name cultures in past times such as the Babylonian Empire and the Roman Empire. They lie on what can be appropriately known as the garbage heaps of history!
The Scriptures at certain points tell us what to expect as the human race finds itself coming down the home stretch of human history. Consider these words of Jesus and the apostle Paul:
Jesus said, "And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed." --- Luke 17:26-30Our idolatry, shedding of innocent blood, massive sexual immorality, trashing the day of worship, teaching our young that we have evolved from lower life forms, and intentional defiance of the laws of a holy God will result in national disaster and collapse far beyond the ability of our little finite minds to comprehend! We can get a bit of a handle on that from the details of God's judgment on the ancient Israelite kingdom of Judah in about 586 BC. A summary is given that provides a crystal clear picture as to why this kingdom experienced its demise:
Paul said, "But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away! For of this sort are those who creep into households and make captives of gullible women loaded down with sins, led away by various lusts, always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth." --- 2 Timothy 3:1-7
Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. He also did evil in the sight of the LORD his God, and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke from the mouth of the LORD. And he also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear an oath by God; but he stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD God of Israel. Moreover all the leaders of the priests and the people transgressed more and more, according to all the abominations of the nations, and defiled the house of the LORD which He had consecrated in Jerusalem. And the LORD God of their fathers sent warnings to them by His messengers, rising up early and sending them, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place. But they mocked the messengers of God, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets, until the wrath of the LORD arose against His people, till there was no remedy. Therefore He brought against them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, on the aged or the weak; He gave them all into his hand. And all the articles from the house of God, great and small, the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king and of his leaders, all these he took to Babylon. Then they burned the house of God, broke down the wall of Jerusalem, burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all its precious possessions. And those who escaped from the sword he carried away to Babylon, where they became servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia, to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her Sabbaths. As long as she lay desolate she kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years. --- 2 Chronicles 36:11-21The answer of course is in repenting of all personal and corporate sins, confessing to God, and making a commitment to be faithful and obedient to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. But since there are just enough theologians, seminary professors, church leaders, pastors, and Sunday School teachers that do not see any need for such drastic action, it is highly unlikely that any transformation will take place. For if these people see no need for true repentance, it is absolutely certain that our political leaders will never urge our citizens to repent and make things right with God, nor will they make this a priority by setting an example in their own personal lives.Falling over a fiscal cliff? As you would listen to the president and members of the U.S. Congress you would think it is the biggest crisis our republic has ever faced. No, the biggest crisis has nothing to do with dollars -- it has to do with fact that we have already gone over a moral cliff of the first magnitude!
"Her priests have violated My law and profaned My holy things; they have not distinguished between the holy and unholy, nor have they made known the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they have hidden their eyes from My Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them. Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, to shed blood, to destroy people, and to get dishonest gain. Her prophets plastered them with untempered mortar, seeing false visions, and divining lies for them, saying, 'Thus says the Lord GOD,' when the LORD had not spoken. The people of the land have used oppressions, committed robbery, and mistreated the poor and needy; and they wrongfully oppress the stranger. So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Therefore I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; and I have recompensed their deeds on their own heads," says the Lord GOD. --- Ezekiel 22:26-31"The instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, to pull down, and to destroy it, if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it. And the instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, if it does evil in My sight so that it does not obey My voice, then I will relent concerning the good with which I said I would benefit it." --- Jeremiah 18:7-10
A Significant Selah Moment!
O LORD, how long shall I cry, and You will not hear? even cry out to You, "Violence!" And You will not save. Why do You show me iniquity, and cause me to see trouble? For plundering and violence are before me; there is strife, and contention arises. Therefore the law is powerless, and justice never goes forth. For the wicked surround the righteous; therefore perverse judgment proceeds.
Habakkuk 1:2-2 (NKJV)
