It has evolved over time and its tentacles have penetrated into nearly every facet of human existence. There are many comparisons which could be made but a fast growing deadly melanoma is one which best identifies the nature of this "industry" that must be terminated quickly or else our culture will most definitely self-destruct!
Would you care to know the ID of this "industry?" It certainly is not struggling financially as are many others at a time when bailouts are being given out as if our president and the U. S. Congress are a personification of a great big national Santa Claus. It is an "industry" that is very huge in scope, involving an incalculable number of people, taking in billions of dollars in "revenue" and world wide in geographical location!
For want of a better term and to graphically clarify what this "industry" is about, let's simply say that it is the sex "industry." It is grossly immoral to the core and exploits to the hilt that part of our being that has to do with our sexuality.
Its invasion of the human race has been accomplished in a wide variety of ways:
the world's oldest "profession" of prostitution thrives in many places both legalized and illegal -- but even in the areas where it is regarded as illegal it has proven to be quite profitable for those who are in the "business."
the publication of magazines and books that dwell on sexually explicit themes with photos and text.
the production of films, videos and still photos described as being "hard core" with sexually explicit content.
the formation of "clubs" devoted to whatever sexual preferences a person may have ranging from heterosexual activity to same sex activities such as sodomy and lesbianism. Added to all this are other types of bizarre behavior such as bondage, sadistic and masochistic activity, and bestiality.
cable TV has helped the sex "industry" to further expand making possible the importing of sexually explicit material into the home environment where privacy is assured. However, the price is not cheap -- whereas you might purchase a standard movie out of Hollywood for $4 to $6 in a special view arrangement, you will pay at least double or more to get the raw sex stuff!
the Internet also has contributed to the rapid expansion of the sex "industry." Web sites have proliferated like maggots on a dead carcass on a 90 degree August day! Again, it is the privacy of the home which has made this part of the "industry" accelerate and generate astronomical incomes for those in the business.
however, it is not just the mushrooming of web sites featuring a "buffet" style of offering all kind of sexual "goodies" -- in the realm of blogging the explicit sexual themes run unbridled and are accessible to about anyone of any age. Some of the blogs may have a "warning" notice indicating what is described as "adult" content and the visitor is not to enter if he or she is under 18 years of age -- that's like telling a very hungry wolf not to jump into a field of helpless sheep!
But as the sex "industry" has ploughed through U. S. culture and the world like an unstoppable juggernaut, there has been the resulting "fruit" as well -- and a very tragic and deadly fruit it has been!
STD's (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) now abound throughout our nation and world. Some of these are incurable and in a few cases, such as AIDS, very deadly.
A question at this point -- if free and open sexual activity is so good as some claim, then why all the STD's? One rather recent study/survey from the CDC (Center for Disease Control) found an alarming situation that provides no encouragement whatsoever that immoral sexual activity is going to be curtailed any time soon. That survey indicated that 1 out of every 4 teen-aged girls has at least 1 STD and some have more than 1!
Controversy rages over how to do proper sex education with our young in our school systems. Pressure is strong suggesting that the little tykes are going to do it anyway, so we need to show them how to do it "safely."
There hss been resistance to the teaching of abstinence and opponents of this approach have gotten more ammunition when yet another survey revealed a large number of teens who had taken the pledge to remain virgins until married had reneged on those pledges, became sexually active and often did not use any method of birth control or "protection" from possible exposure to a STD!
It is impossible to calculate the human wreckage with its accompanying heartbreak and sorrow resulting from the aggressive practices of a very powerful sex "industry."
It behooves those who take God's revelation on human sexuality seriously to faithfully bear witness to that revelation and to intensely pray concerning this vicious threat to the health and well being of our beloved republic. Prayer is truly a very powerful weapon in fighting the good fight of faith -- let's use it to see the downfall of this destructive "industry."
